nursing student school covid coronavirus

Nurse educators were left scrambling as nursing schools began shuttering campuses due to COVID-19 in mid-March.

Overnight, nursing students, only months away from graduating were left in the dark — not knowing if they would ever be able to put “RN” after their name.

All this on the cusp of a growing nursing shortage (expected to hit 569,700 by 2024 according to the BLS).

While the education of nursing students hung in the balance, one small (nurse owned) company sprang into action. On March 14, 2020, NURSING.com sent a message to a small handful of nurse educators around the country . . .

We are offering FREE student accounts to colleges and universities impacted with clinical or classroom closures until May 15, 2020.

What happened next?

Passionate nurse educators from around the globe began reaching out — within 24 hours of sending the email, NURSING.com had already donated 8,900 online education accounts.

But it didn’t stop there. . .

Since March 14, 2020, NURSING.com has donated 52,568 online learning accounts to nursing schools — allowing for nursing students to continue learning despite university closures.

Ms. Parker, a nurse educator in California said; “Love how Nursing.com has come to the aid of instructors during this CoVid-19 pandemic! Thanks Nursing.com for your help!”

Message to Nurse Educators from Jon Haws, RN (founder and CEO of NURSING.com)

Unique Challenges — Unique Solution

Nursing students face a unique set of education requirements when compared to other college degrees. Upon graduation, they are expected to be able to enter a hospital and care for a patient.

This requires a set number of patient contact hours (clinical hours). COVID-19 has forced hospitals to limit clinical hour availability to nursing schools thereby preventing students from obtaining the required hours.

To combat this challenge, NURSING.com again rose to the occasion by deploying a course for nurses and nursing students designed to provide “low fidelity” simulation clinical hours through nursing case studies, skills videos, and other distance learning resources taught by practicing nurses.

An Unrivaled Online Learning Resource for Nursing Students

NURSING.com isn’t new to online education. The company (formerly NRSNG) was founded initially as a blog and podcast by Jon Haws, RN, Alumnus CCRN.

On the podcast (which has 11,164,200 downloads as of April 2020), Jon would educate nursing students via a now famous (among nursing students) pedagogy called the Core Content Mastery Method (CCMM).

The podcast grew and in January 2020, NRSNG became NURSING.com — in an effort to further the company mission — of ending the nursing shortage.

The Core Content Mastery Method™ (CCMM) is embedded into every one of the more than 3,000 lessons taught by Master’s prepared practicing nurses on NURSING.com.

In short, the CCMM does a couple things:

  • Meets students where they are with their preferred learning style (CCMM employs the VARK method) via short Kahn Academy style videos, visual cheatsheets, outlines, mastery questions, and more
  • Provides a rigorous lesson creation and delivery framework that is held to in every lesson video

“We are incredibly humbled . . .”

Haws stated that he is both “incredibly humbled and proud of the response of the NURSING.com team”.

When I floated the idea of essentially giving away our product, not a single member of our team hesitated. They. all immediately jumped at the opportunity to help — in what small way we can. And I believe that goes back to our mission — To End The Nursing Shortage.

That is something we take very seriously.
